2024 Fundraiser Cruise – Carnival Jubilee – January 13-20, 2024 – James Harrison handed out fliers on the cruise itinerary and cost.

2023-2024 New Club Officers
LCI and Belton Lions website have been updated with the new Officers.

USA Flag Program – Club Secretary has called most of the “unpaid” participants; Thank you Danny Dossman and Mike Matthews for running flags all week.  We now have only 7 unpaid.
Picnic in the Park, October 7th – James Harrison – next meeting will be Friday, May 26th at the Belton Chamber
Lions on the Leon Wacky Boat Race, October 7th – Danny Dossman – recap from Monday, May 22nd meeting.
Boat construction began Wednesday, May 24th.  David Tuma is getting the barrels for us – Thank You!
Haley Cox and Dr. William B. Long Memorial Scholarships – Todd Schiller email update – … we have received 9 applications for the William Long Scholarship and 7 for the Halley Cox Scholarship.

Program:  Marek-Smith Teacher Training Center – speaker Rebecca O’Banion, Ed. D. Vice President for Advancement, UMHB; and Aaron Rodeffer, UMHB Gift Officer – presented an update – transforming special education training in Texas – scheduled for completion in the Fall.  This new state-of-the-art 11,000 sq. ft. facility will lead the way for training and educating special education instructors. After the Program, Belton Lions Club Foundation presented a $2,500 check in support of the Marek Smith Training Center at UMHB.  Marek-Smith-Center-Brochure-2022.pdf (umhb.edu)

85th Anniversary of the Belton Lions Club – James Harrison is planning a Celebration. James explained that Belton Lions Club first met in 1938; then Chartered in 1939.
Bell County Senior Expo – September 26th – Kimberly Cables, Belton Journal is requesting volunteers for the 8am-1pm event.  Sign-up sheet will be passed in September.  Our BLC logo has been added to the Senior Expo header online.
Judy Garrett, Belton CVB, extended an offer for the Belton Lions to, again, host our Plate Spinning Contest; and sell the Tasting Tickets, at Belton Bacon, Blues and Brews on Saturday, September 30th (which is the week before the Picnic and Boat Race). After discussion, it was agreed that the Club would participate and hold the fundraiser.

New Business:
– Stampede Financial Update – Total Income: $9,568.54 / Total Expenditures: $1,372.86 / Profit: $8,195.68

– Credit Cards – Jon Fontenot reporting that the bank charges roughly $40/month; plus rental on the machine.
There was also discussion on which account to use; or both … also possibly using the less expensive square on cell phones.  Further investigation will be done and presented when available.

– Picnic in the Park Expenses – James Harrison reported that they are looking into entertainment.  He and the Committee are going to try to get one Sponsor for the overall event; a Sponsor for the Entertainment; a Sponsor for the Boat Race.  Big name entertainment to draw large crowds may cost $2,000 or more.  The bands will need to be Family Friendly.  The City is in discussion about allowing adult beverages in the future on Park grounds, but this will not happen prior to the Picnic.  Suggestion was made to arrange to have a portable ATM machine at the event for Fish Fry and other ticket sales.

– Wacky Boat Race Expenses – Danny Dossman reported that expenses should be minimal; and that the Committee will be reaching out for underwriting sponsorships for t-shirts and Pirate Booty/Swag bags.

Old Business:

– 4th of July Belton Parade – does the Club want to take part?  Hold over to June Board Meeting.

Holding to a Later Date:

– Moving Eyeglass Collection Box – this was tabled at the January Board Meeting – left tabled.
– Banner Stand and Specialty Products – John Corsi and Jon Fontenot – this was tabled at the January Board Meeting – left tabled.

Lions on the Leon Wacky Boat Race, October 7th – Danny Dossman created a promotional powerpoint presentation. Once the powerpoint is complete; and Picnic in the Park is added, the Club members can start visiting other Clubs to promote the event and create excitement for them to create an entry into the Boat Race.  Members volunteering to do the Club visits: Steve Smith, Jennah Gliha, David Tuma, Christa Strang & Brett Beamesderfer.

Haley Cox and Dr. William B. Long Memorial Scholarships – deadline may be this Friday, May 19th.  Update soon.

Program:  Todd Schiller invited Frank Murray, BISD Director of Instructional Technology and Campus Support to talk with us about Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and Artificial Intelligence. In his absence, Keith Cook hosted and introduced.  Wow – Technology! Thank You!

Stampede Recap – Shout out of appreciation to everyone for contributing to the huge success of the event.

There were 102 Riders on a chilly start morning and a windy day!  Eldred’s Nursery students and the BISD Special Needs group were a fun and exciting addition to this year’s event.  Teamwork makes Dreamwork – it’s always a great day to be a Belton Lion!  Additional recap information to be presented soon.

Program: – Rob Potts invited Rucker Preston, Promise House. www.familypromisebellcounty.org/promise-house – Mission:  Empowering families experiencing homelessness to achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. He explained their Guest Shelter Program and Diversion Initiative, and shared testimonial success stories.  Promise House officially opened in January after two years of vision and planning.  Great Service to families; and Great Program!

Announcements

Danny Dossman announced that he has invited Belton Kiwanis to come join Belton Lions.  He also announced that next week, he will have an announcement.

Stampede – Brett Beamesderfer – Reese Davis – Official Press Release and purchased ad space is scheduled for Thursday, April 20th.  T-Shirts will be ordered tonight. Thank you, Lion Patti Powell for volunteering to Team Lead on-site Registration and to Lion Veronica Logan for Team Leading on-site t-shirts. The Club picked up Media 2 Social Network and Dossman Funeral Home this week as Stampede Sponsors. The Sponsor total is now up to $5,350 – Great Work!

H-E-B has donated $100 in gift cards, as well as, Sam’s Club $50 and Belton WalMart $50.  Call was put out for volunteers to help with Registration and to help with shopping and picking up supplies.  Cree Childs, Keith Cook, Steve Smith, Sam Listi and Joseph Logan volunteered. 

Picnic in the Park, October 7th – Update from on-site meeting, Tuesday, April 11, at Heritage Park.  Christa Strang reported on the on-site visual walk-thru of the venue and plans.  They are working to get 1st Cav for entertainment … more details to come.

Lions on the Leon Wacky Boat Race, October 7th – Danny Dossman – update from meeting Monday, April 10th. Danny reported that the BLC Pirate Boat entry is in the works.  We have a list of all of the Clubs and Organizations – with their weekly/monthly meeting dates, locations and times.  He is creating a “canned” powerpoint presentation that can be used to promote the Race.  Danny will make some of the presentations and is requesting volunteers to help out with the presentation promotions.

Haley Cox and Dr. William B. Long Memorial Scholarships – Todd Schiller will be distributing the scholarship applications next week; with a return date request for early May.

Program: – Mac Hickerson arranged for a program on Fine and Graphic Arts! Caricature artist extraordinaire Buddy Hickerson demonstrated the art – recreating his subject Christa Strang!  Delightfully entertaining presentation of talent!

Stampede – Brett Beamesderfer reported, with online, mail-in and sponsor registrations, we now have 61 riders.  Diamond G Ranch became a sponsor today. Reese Davis reported that we now have $4,600 in sponsorships. Secretary Stagner urged all “member sponsors” to submit rider paperwork before April 20th to avoid confusion at on-site registration.  Event T-Shirts will be ordered on Monday. Information on the Ride has been submitted for the District Newsletter.  Also, information for “what happening”, B-Town bulletin, etc. has been submitted to Temple Telegram, Belton Journal and Killeen Daily Herald.  Official Press Release and purchased ad space is scheduled for Thursday, April 20th. 

Picnic in the Park, October 7th – The next meeting will be on-site at Heritage Park.  Anyone wanting to attend, please be at the Lions Pavilion, Tuesday, April 11th at 1:00pm.

Lions on the Leon Wacky Boat Race, October 7th – Danny Dossman – We are in need of LARGE cardboard boxes – to start building our boat. The next meeting will be Monday, April 10th, 6:00pm at the home of Danny Dossman.  Information on the Wacky Boat Race has been submitted for the District Newsletter.  Danny reported that we have commitments for 8-9 boat entries already.

Program: – Margaret Chadwick, Eldred’s Nursery provided a brief history and an update on their training & placement services transitioning youth with special needs and disabilities into our community workplaces. Master Gardeners have partnered with Eldred’s – teaching and have set up rain barrels for irrigation.  They are working on a plan for Day Habilitation; and Respite Care for providers and family.  Eldred’s trainees will be assisting Lion Lou Griffin with the hot dogs at the Stampede on the Chisholm Trail 2023.  Always a great and interesting program. Initial membership application fee raised from $35 to $50 to cover badge expense.

Rest Stops: #1 KOM Cyclery; # 2 healthmarkets; # 3 redbox+ of Central Texas; # 4 CenTex Automotive; # 5 Hickerson Family.
Free Hot Dogs – post ride: Lou Griffin will be Lion Team Leader – assisted by either HOCTIL or Eldred’s Nursery children with special needs.
Snow Cones: KOM Christina’s daughter will be Team Leader for BLC – assisted by Belton High School Special Needs Department students.  This will be a fundraiser & all proceeds will benefit BHS Dept.
STRAVA interactive maps have been created by KOM and will be given to the registered riders.  Ride routes have changed slightly and have been approved. Photos of the routes are attached to this recap.
Event T-Shirt order deadline is Wednesday, April 5th – t-shirt order will be placed during week of 4/10.
Sponsors wishing to receive all benefits, including event t-shirts must also be in by April 5th.
Patti Powell has volunteered to help Reese Davis contacting and following up on Sponsors.
Reese Davis has ordered 100 Welcome Bags from the Belton Chamber of Commerce.
Patti Powell will be Team Leader for on-site Registration; Veronica Logan will be Event T-Shirt on-site coordination.  Registration recap and planning meeting will be held during week of April 17th.
KOM will be providing SAG wagon; and will be providing the drink powder for the rest stop(s) igloo coolers.
Routes will be marked on Thursday; then rechecked on Friday – John Wiist, KOM, has volunteered to help mark route.
Reese Davis will coordinate with Sam Listi for tables, chairs, trash cans, restrooms, etc.
Redbox+ Christa Strang will be providing three (3) sanitation station/dumpsters for the ride this year.

are scheduled for Thursday, April 20th.

Program: – Keith Cook – Dr. Stephanie Ferguson, BISD Director of PK-12 Career Readiness – an update on all of BISD Career Technical Education (CTE) programs.  Challenge ~ Prepare ~ Empower. As students prepare for the workforce of tomorrow, CTE teachers prepare them to become college and career-ready by offering career exploration, employability, technical, and job-specific training in specific career clusters. In the past three years, more than 300 students have demonstrated skills at district, regional, state and national CTSO competitions.  Great Program!  Thank You!
