2024 Fundraiser Cruise – Carnival Jubilee – January 13-20, 2024 – James Harrison handed out fliers on the cruise itinerary and cost.
Board Meeting Recap

2023-2024 New Club Officers
LCI and Belton Lions website have been updated with the new Officers.
Installation planned June 15th for all Board Officers – with “Joint” Board Meeting after lunch
USA Flag Program – Club Secretary has called most of the “unpaid” participants; Thank you Danny Dossman and Mike Matthews for running flags all week.  We now have only 7 unpaid.
Picnic in the Park, October 7th – James Harrison – next meeting will be Friday, May 26th at the Belton Chamber
Lions on the Leon Wacky Boat Race, October 7th – Danny Dossman – recap from Monday, May 22nd meeting.
Boat construction began Wednesday, May 24th.  David Tuma is getting the barrels for us – Thank You!
Haley Cox and Dr. William B. Long Memorial Scholarships – Todd Schiller email update – … we have received 9 applications for the William Long Scholarship and 7 for the Halley Cox Scholarship.

Program:  Marek-Smith Teacher Training Center – speaker Rebecca O’Banion, Ed. D. Vice President for Advancement, UMHB; and Aaron Rodeffer, UMHB Gift Officer – presented an update – transforming special education training in Texas – scheduled for completion in the Fall.  This new state-of-the-art 11,000 sq. ft. facility will lead the way for training and educating special education instructors. After the Program, Belton Lions Club Foundation presented a $2,500 check in support of the Marek Smith Training Center at UMHB.  Marek-Smith-Center-Brochure-2022.pdf (umhb.edu)

85th Anniversary of the Belton Lions Club – James Harrison is planning a Celebration. James explained that Belton Lions Club first met in 1938; then Chartered in 1939.
Bell County Senior Expo – September 26th – Kimberly Cables, Belton Journal is requesting volunteers for the 8am-1pm event.  Sign-up sheet will be passed in September.  Our BLC logo has been added to the Senior Expo header online.
Judy Garrett, Belton CVB, extended an offer for the Belton Lions to, again, host our Plate Spinning Contest; and sell the Tasting Tickets, at Belton Bacon, Blues and Brews on Saturday, September 30th (which is the week before the Picnic and Boat Race). After discussion, it was agreed that the Club would participate and hold the fundraiser.

Membership Report – Karen Stagner $4,525 of $4,940 dues has been paid for the 3rd Quarter (Jan. thru Mar.).

New Business:
– Stampede Financial Update – Total Income: $9,568.54 / Total Expenditures: $1,372.86 / Profit: $8,195.68

– Credit Cards – Jon Fontenot reporting that the bank charges roughly $40/month; plus rental on the machine.
There was also discussion on which account to use; or both … also possibly using the less expensive square on cell phones.  Further investigation will be done and presented when available.

– Picnic in the Park Expenses – James Harrison reported that they are looking into entertainment.  He and the Committee are going to try to get one Sponsor for the overall event; a Sponsor for the Entertainment; a Sponsor for the Boat Race.  Big name entertainment to draw large crowds may cost $2,000 or more.  The bands will need to be Family Friendly.  The City is in discussion about allowing adult beverages in the future on Park grounds, but this will not happen prior to the Picnic.  Suggestion was made to arrange to have a portable ATM machine at the event for Fish Fry and other ticket sales.

– Wacky Boat Race Expenses – Danny Dossman reported that expenses should be minimal; and that the Committee will be reaching out for underwriting sponsorships for t-shirts and Pirate Booty/Swag bags.

Old Business:

– 4th of July Belton Parade – does the Club want to take part?  Hold over to June Board Meeting.

Holding to a Later Date:

– Moving Eyeglass Collection Box – this was tabled at the January Board Meeting – left tabled.
– Banner Stand and Specialty Products – John Corsi and Jon Fontenot – this was tabled at the January Board Meeting – left tabled.
– Belton Lions Wall at Heritage Park – James Harrison coordinating – plans are progressing.  Tabled until after Picnic in the Park.

Lions on the Leon Wacky Boat Race, October 7th – Danny Dossman created a promotional powerpoint presentation. Once the powerpoint is complete; and Picnic in the Park is added, the Club members can start visiting other Clubs to promote the event and create excitement for them to create an entry into the Boat Race.  Members volunteering to do the Club visits: Steve Smith, Jennah Gliha, David Tuma, Christa Strang & Brett Beamesderfer.

Haley Cox and Dr. William B. Long Memorial Scholarships – deadline may be this Friday, May 19th.  Update soon.

Program:  Todd Schiller invited Frank Murray, BISD Director of Instructional Technology and Campus Support to talk with us about Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and Artificial Intelligence. In his absence, Keith Cook hosted and introduced.  Wow – Technology! Thank You!

Marek-Smith Training Center Donor Wall – we have contacted Rebecca O’Banion, UMHB, to come to lunch; pick up the check & make the arrangements to have “Belton Lions Club Foundation” listed on the Donor Wall of the building at UMHB. She will join us on May 25th for the presentation and will provide an update on the progress.

Bell County Senior Expo – September 26th – Kimberly Cables, Belton Journal, is requesting volunteers for the 8am-1pm event.  Members agreed that this would be good exposure for the Club & we would wear our new t-shirts.

Stampede Recap – Shout out of appreciation to everyone for contributing to the huge success of the event.

There were 102 Riders on a chilly start morning and a windy day!  Eldred’s Nursery students and the BISD Special Needs group were a fun and exciting addition to this year’s event.  Teamwork makes Dreamwork – it’s always a great day to be a Belton Lion!  Additional recap information to be presented soon.
