Announcements

– There will NOT be a BLC Lunch Meeting on Thursday, August 28th.

– Vision Screening Training Classes, Saturday, August 23rd, 9am, Killeen Lions Den, 5100 Trimmier Rd., Lion(s) Karen, Jennah and Chris have registered.

– LIONS on the LEON (6 weeks out) – Handout – lots of needs listed on the handout – please READ. (let us know where you can help reduce these needs)  – Sponsor handout – challenge each member to bring back at least one sponsor at ANY level. We NEED sponsorships to offset cost to hold the event – printing, signs, prizes & awards, carnival games & prizes.

  – Need business flyers and/or coupons; and stuff for Swag Bags (75) and also need gift cards for Bib Raffle (10).

  – Silent/Bucket Auction – we have five (5) baskets so far – need more

  – Volunteer Sign Up by area/category/time will be available 1st week of September – like STAMPEDE – it’s all hands on deck – and kids, and spouses, and cousins – lots of new areas this year where volunteers will be needed

  – NOTE: Captain “D” 5K Dash for “Sight” will most likely be part of the Cen-Tex Race Series in 2026 – tentatively approved.

  – Belton U Event for Belton Employees, Bawcom Center, Thursday, August 28th.  (handout) … promote the Wacky Boat Race, Picnic in the Park, 5K too – as well as Club Membership. Lion Karen Stagner planning to attend and will take/provide all of the necessary supplies. Anyone Joining?

Keep on the Front Burner/Mark Your Calendar:- LEO Club – the Club has been asked to join with Temple Breakfast Lions to support their existing LEO Club – this is a liaison commitment request; not monetary.  We need a member to volunteer to be our Club liaison with Dr. Ponder and Dorree Collins.  Please consider volunteering to meet with Dr. Ponder and Dorree to get more information– Lion President Jon volunteered to meet with them to get more information. Karen has reached out the Lisle Meeker for possible dates, locations and times – TBD

– Our Club will be selling the People’s Choice tickets and our Plate Spinning Contest at Belton, Bacon, Blues and Brews, September 27
– October 4th, LIONS on the LEON, Captain “D” Dash for Sight, 8:30am; Picnic in the Park, 10a-1p; Wacky Open & Cardboard Boat Race, People’s Choice Judging starts at 11am, race heats start at 1pm.
– October 10 & 11, Belton Polka on the Square, Save the Date – at this time, we’re unaware if we will be serving or helping.
– October 11 & 12, Rescue Magazine Pet Adoption Extravaganza, 10am-5pm – Save the Date – possibly lending the Black Pearl again.
– October 18th, District Cabinet Meeting, hosted by Harker Heights Lions
– November 1st, 2-4pm, CTCS, 14 Annual Fall Festival for families of children with special needs
– November 20 – Thanksgiving Basket Delivery
– December 11 – Christmas Basket Delivery (note – earlier date)
– December 18, (set up at 1pm), 5-8pm, Harris Center, Pictures with Santa for families of children with special needs.
– January 31st, District Mid-Winter Conference (Lorena), hosted by the Robinson Lions Club
– April 11th, District Convention, hosted by the Palestine Lions Club
– Lions Field @Smith and West 5th could use some updates. Jon Fontenot will get Parks & Rec to explore options – tabled until we have more information.
– The Club plans to participate in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Keith Cook will take the lead during the 2025-26 school year.
– Membership Milestone Awards – Will we be presenting these at Christmas?  The Board agreed that Milestones will be in five (5) year increments; starting at 10 year membership. – John Corsi and Jennah Gliha.  Secretary has provided a Report of each member’s length of membership. – No discussion at this meeting

– MD 2-X3 Cabinet Meeting, August 9th, recap – our Club is in great shape – informative Cabinet meeting.

– LIONS on the LEON (a little less than 2 months out)
  – Sponsor handout – challenge each member to bring back at least one sponsor at ANY level. We NEED sponsorships to offset cost to hold the event – printing, signs, prizes & awards, carnival games & prizes.

  – Mail-out and emails to Belton Businesses and past sponsors (200 businesses) out last week.

Three (3) cash sponsors so far: Smoke Eater Guitars, Cochran, Blair & Potts and RVOS Insurance; plus Woodhouse Day Spa, Goodnight Loving Vodka & H-E-B as in-kind; and one Vendor – Christy’s.
  – Picnic in the Park – Jay White and the Blues Commanders –Thank you to Judy Garrett
  – Captain “D” Dash for Sight – 5K Fun Run/Walk – handout – route has been finalized –Our fliers in runner packets for Community Connection 5K & Nolanville 5K Foxtrot. We are posted on Running in the USA and on RunGuides; as well as Run Sign-up.  We already have runners signed up.

Ron Ducharme, President of Rescue Magazine and Consultant for Bell County Animal Shelter and along with his side kick, Princess Leia. From collecting food, toys, and all the supplies needed for animals in the shelters..he makes it look easy. Thank you for all he does for the animal community.

Program: Lion Sam Listi provided an update on the City of Belton – Growth, Development Trends, Investments, MUD Districts, Water Resources; Joe Dyer presented on Parks and Rec – updates & Phase 2 expansion at Heritage Park is scheduled for 2027; Fire Chief Lion Jon Fontenot presented on the Fire Department – updates and improvements; and the Club presented our annual Heritage Park partnership check in the amount of $5,000.  (group photo w/club members)

– Flag Program – all participants paid in full.
                We will start FB promo this weekend to try to increase participation. In 2020, we had 227
                participants; currently for 2025, we have 117
                Markers for flag poles – price update
                                200 4”x4” Custom die-cut stickers will run about $1.00 each; ordered from Print-it.
                                200 4”x4” Custom die-cut plastic from Chris’ source – $225 per sheet cut; material is .125
                              1/8” thick, possibly all can be cut from one sheet. 200 screws and washers
                After discussion, Lion Karen made motion to not move forward; 2nd by Lion James Harrison;

                We’re 2 ½ months out and have started promoting on social media this week – now that we have map.
               We have no sponsors as of this date we need to start reaching out for sponsors.
                Nolan Creek Band is not available – we need to find a band or DJ quickly
               We will not be competing with Ribs & Rods this year.

– Website Challenge – Thank you Lion David Leigh for help with our Website.  Lion Karen is now backing up all of the individual files on the website.
– MS 150 Bike Ride offer – (handout) – after lengthy discussion, it was motioned and 2nd to decline the sponsorship offer.  Lion Karen will follow up with the Society.
– Girl Scout Troop 8121 Silver Award Project – Belton Early Childhood School (BECS) Outdoor Learning Center Project Support Request. After discussion, Lion Karen made motion to sponsor the Hammock Garden for $456; 2nd by Lion Jennah; approved.
– Heritage Park Playground in need of Repairs (handout) – President Jon has been in discussion with the City of Belton; & will keep us updated.
– Kerr County Update – President Jon has been in touch with our Zone and District Disaster teams and will keep us updated as to when and how our Club might be able to help.

2024-2025 BLC Service Metrics – Our Club served 11,099 People; 432 Volunteers served 3,568 hours; raised $14,203.00; and of those raised funds, gave $13,147.00 back to the Belton Community. Fantastic Service Belton Lions; under the Leadership of Past President Jennah Gliha! 

DUAL Program 

Belton Early Childhood School (BECS) Outdoor Learning Center – Keira Dzenowski, Abigail Johnson (not able to attend) & Mariel Kacal, Scout Troop 8121 – Girl Scout Silver Award Project. (Handout attached) BECS (Belton Early Childhood School) Outdoor Learning Center. The space will foster students’ creativity, growth, and love of nature, offering a safe and educational environment for learning beyond the classroom. They are recruiting fosters and volunteers. The Board will discuss at next Board meeting (July 17th). Their goal is to have it complete before School starts.

Belton 4th of July Parade (Friday, July 4th, 9am) – last minute detailsLion Danny Dossman Captain “D” Plans to attempt to join the ship once he finishes the Parade as Beltonian of the Year. Requested volunteers today at 3pm, Danny’s to finish up preparations and decorate.     After the Parade, Pearl will return to Danny’s until we take it to storage, 3pm Monday – need         volunteer help.

– BOARD Meeting Recap:

Flag Program – only 3 unpaid remaining. We are starting a recruitment drive for new participants.
Ice Chests & First Aid Kits – the Board discussed and approved purchasing 4-medium RTIC ice chests and 4 OSHA Compliant First Aid Kits for use on our events. Lion President Jon is going to schedule a Stop the Bleed class for the Club.
LEO Club – the Board discussed the proposal from PDG Lisle Meeker to partner with them and their existing Temple LEO Club; to form a Temple-Belton LEO Club. It was agreed to present this to the Membership for interest and participation. Pending a Club Member to Volunteer as Counselor to work with Dr. Ponder & Doree Collins.
President Jon Fontenot reminded the Board that Board Meeting dates’ program(s) will be “general membership news and project updates”.  And, Committee Sign-up list will be circulated next meeting.

General Business and Announcements 

– Joint Service Opportunity, Friday (tomorrow), June 27th, 5pm, invitation from Temple Founders to help serve Dream Catcher dinner (pizza and cookies) to campers returning from Texas Lions Camp. It is at Baylor Scott & White Mayborn Auditorium TAMU Medical Building, It is behind the ER. We need head-count for Deb Swift-Alejandro. Keith Cook, Karen Stagner & Sam Listi will attend.

– Belton 4th of July Parade (Friday, July 4th, 9am). Our entry is #87. We will need help getting the Pearl out of storage on Monday, June 30th; 3pm; and getting it ready for the Parade.  We need Pirates to ride in the ship.
– Back to School with God, Saturday, July 19th, 9am-Noon, Yettie Polk Park – Mark Your Calendar – sign up sheet to circulate. Lea Batey will coordinate eye-screeners and equipment. Belton PD for Command Vehicle.  Maybe Scouts to help wrap hot dogs.
– Great News!  Ribs n Rods has changed their Cook-off date to November.  We will no longer be competing with them for October 4th – Lions on the Leon.
– Motioned, 2nd and approved to name our new mascot – LINUS!
