July 23rd Meeting – We’re Back!

We’re BACK! July 23rd

It was so good to see our fellow Belton Lions Thursday at The GIN!  What a GREAT meeting!  … and the food was delicious!  The GIN did a tremendous job enabling recommended social distancing.  To those of you who were unable to join us … WE MISSED YOU!  Here’s the Highlights …
  • Outgoing Remarks by President Knight – recapping the year and thanking everyone for support and a great year.
Oath of Officers administered to the incoming 2020-2021 Officers by Lion Ellis – Thank You!
Presentation of Appreciation Plaque by President Lion Harrison to Past President Gary Knight for his dedicated service to the Club.
Introduction of Speaker Matt Bates (usual Lion Welcome) – Matt Bates provided a very informative update on Heritage Park improvements; as well as, overall improvements and changes during the past year; and upcoming plans for Belton Parks.  We even learned a new nickname for one of Belton’s Parks Department staff – you had to be there on this one.
Following the Belton Parks update, Past President Knight presented our annual $5,000.00 support contribution for Heritage Park to Matt Bates for the City of Belton.
Flag Program: Lion Shaw’s idea for our new program has been a tremendous success … we have added almost 100 new participants and many of them are personally purchasing lights for the flags to enable flying 24 hours.  We are continually adding new participants and are replacing old and worn USA flags.  We now have an inventory of 100 spare USA flags. Thank you to everyone who put the flags out earlier in the year; and to Lion Knight and Lion Shaw for continually maintaining the program.
Coffee Mugs:  We have replaced our inventory with 144 logo personalized coffee cups to “Mug” our presenters at our weekly meetings.  Lion Knight will contact previous presenters to present belated “Thank You” mugs.
Lion Holle Memorial concept:  Lion Shaw, coordinating with Matt Bates, presented a suggestion that when the city replaces the Scoreboard at the ball field (which they are planning to do), the current Belton Lions sponsorship sign (faded) could be replaced with a new sign to include a memorial statement to the memory of Lion Dennis Holle.
There is a list of ALL of the Past Presidents of the Belton Lions Club that is now posted on the Belton Lions Club website.  Just a note … Lion Holle compiled this list for the Club in commemoration of our 75th Anniversary several years ago.
Thank you to our members for Lionism – paying full dues for the 1st and 2nd quarter – enabling the Club to continue with our Heritage Park commitment and scholarships.
Sickness and Distress: Member Tootie Wingo is out and recovering at home from back surgery.  She will be out for another 10 weeks.  President Harrison will bring a card to the next meeting for everyone to sign; donations/contributions for a gift and flowers will be welcome; and … we’ll deliver!
Lion Smith updated the Club concerning Scholarships for 2020: with the current school situation, it is uncertain whether applications for the William Long or Hallie Cox Scholarships will be submitted for the 2020 year – due to the school limitations.  Lion Smith will keep us informed.
We will meet again next week … let’s make this second half of 2020 monumental!  There is so much we can do … and WILL do … hope to see you ALL soon!

NEW CHANGES in the USA Flag Program for 2020

Thank you for your past, present & future participation and support of the Belton Lions Club US Flag Program.  It is encouraging to see the participation of so many in our community, as we proudly fly the flag of the United States of America.

As we are living in uncertain times of shelter-in-place and social distancing, our Belton Lions Club members have decided to expand on the Flag Program with an idea to flood the Belton streets with American flags as a continuing collective statement of courage, unity and hope.

Here’s the plan:

Step 1: Belton Lions Club Members will place your Flag in your yard, prior to the first normal scheduled day, Memorial Day.

Step 2: The Belton Lions Club asks you to fly the Flag daily during these challenging times.  The flag will be entrusted to your care for the remainder of the year.  Since the flag should be illuminated if displayed at night, we ask you to take the Flag in each night at dusk, and replace it in the yard each morning at sunrise.

The Belton Lions Club will remind you by email the day before a recognized holiday to ensure the flags are displayed – on Memorial Day-May 25th, Flag Day-June 14th, Independence Day-July 4th, Patriot Day-September 11th, and Veterans Day-November 7th.

Step 3: We anticipate all flags will be picked up by the Belton Lions at dusk on November 7th, to secure flags for the Winter.

For current participants in the new 2020 Flag Program, we have reduced the annual program cost from $30 to $25.  We would appreciate payment by July 1, but we understand if you need longer.  Just let us know.

It is you who accomplish the extraordinary in our community. Together, we will fortify hope. Together, we will show our American pride of strength by displaying our flag.  Together, we will get through this.
