Habitat for Humanity Workday

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

In October, a Habitat House will be under construction at 605 Davis Avenue in Belton. I have scheduled our club to help with a workday on October 25th.  A sign-up sheet will be circulated.

For years, Lions around the country have helped Habitat for Humanity build houses for deserving families. Many of you may have worked on a Habitat House through your church or other fraternal or civic organizations.  If you have not had the opportunity, I can tell you that it is an experience you will never forget.  It is truly amazing to see people with no construction experience begin cutting and nailing pieces of lumber together that somehow become a doorway, a window opening, or a roof. It is totally awesome!

Please consider helping. It will be a fun day and well worth your time.

Eyeglass Recycle Day - Sept. 20

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

We collected approximately 150 pairs of eyeglasses on Saturday September 20th.  We faithfully manned the corner of N. Penelope and Central Ave. from 8:00 am till noon.

I want to thank all the Lions that came out to help and donate their used eyeglasses to our cause. With the help of prior collection efforts by Lion Dr. Weaver and Lion Danny Dossman, we were able to send 372 pairs of glasses to the Lion’s Recycling Center in Midland.

I also want to express a special thank you to Lion Gunter and Lion Potts for allowing us to use their businesses for our collection efforts.

Lasagna Supper

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Attendance was great at this year’s Lasagna Supper. I want to thank everyone involved for making this such a successful event for our club and our community. We served approximately 366 meals and collected $725.00 at the door.  Our total net income from the event will probably be around $1,600.00. This may seem like we are turning a profit, but actually it is costing the club about $1,000.00 to host this event. Here is a quick break-down of the situation:

(Collect $50.00 from members for tickets x 50 members = $2,500.00 plus $725.00 sales at the door = $3,225.00 less $1,200.00 for food, advertising, signs and supplies less $425.00 for cafeteria rental and cafeteria staff = $1,600.00 net income.)

In reality, we collected $2,500.00 from members for tickets, to make $1,600.00 from the event.

                                                  $2,500.00 - $1,600.00 = $900.00 cost

The Board of Directors discussed this matter at our last meeting on September 11th and decided to possibly replace the Lasagna Supper with another fund raising activity or community event. Lion Quinton Locklin will be assessing the situation and will make a decision during his term as president.
